What you need

A machine that runs Docker, such as a home server, a NAS or a small VPS. To use the AI coach, add an API key for your model provider.

Start RunBuddy

Clone the repository and start the stack, then open http://localhost:3000:

git clone https://github.com/broemp/workoutTracker.git runbuddy && cd runbuddy
cp .env.example .env # optional: set AI_API_KEY for the coach
docker compose up --build

Single-user mode

The default setup is single-user: no sign-up, no login screen, and it only listens on your own machine. To reach it from other devices, or to run it with accounts and TLS on a public domain, follow the deployment guide in the repository.

Connect the iOS app

In the web app on your server, go to Settings → Devices & API and create a client for your iPhone. Scan its QR code from the RunBuddy iOS app to point it at your server.

Use it in Claude

Your server is also an MCP server. Add it as a custom connector in Claude, and Claude can read your training and manage your plan with the same tools as the built-in coach.
